Theatre For Young America (Monarchs Of Kc) , The
Reviewed on 2004-01-27
Runs through Feb 13 at the Dickenson Top 2 theater in Mission, then it moves to the (H&R Block City Stage at Union Station on Feb 26) This original musical was produced in collaboration with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. An inspiring story depicts a sort of supernatural flashback in which we meet the young incarnations of many of the great Monarchs: "Satchel" Page, Jackie Robinson and James Bell among them. Gene Mackey's clever script, along with several wonderful original songs by Danny Cox makes this one-hour production entertaining and educational. It concerns an African-American family poking around in the locker room of an abandoned stadium where the Kansas City Monarchs used to play. That is when the ghosts of baseball greats from the past appear. Cox is Rube Foster, founder of the Negro Baseball League. Johnnie Bowls is both Bullet Rogan and Jackie Robinson. George Forbes is hilarious with his portrayal of the great one: Satchel Page. Director Jacqee Gafford coaxes good performances from Lynn King and young Joseph Cox. Performances start at 5909 Johnson Drive in Mission. They move to Union Station later. Call 913-831-2131 for details.
