| Beware The Matrix. Most people who really liked 1999's The Matrix will have seen The Matrix Reloaded by now. Fair warning: Do not see the new film until you have viewed, or even re-viewed the first one. A James Bond movie pretty well stands on its own. Seeing the second Harry Potter movie first will cost the viewer some context, but not leave them totally at sea. The Matrix Reloaded is that famous 'horse of a different color.' Borrow, rent or buy the original before you attempt to understand the new film. Larry and Andy Wachowski direct this dark fantasy of worlds within worlds. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as prophet, possible savior, and disciple, in a world where most humans exist as living batteries for intelligent machines. Six months after the first film ended the existence of all free humans is at stake. The structure of the Matrix is not what it seemed. Hopefully part three, coming late this year, will explain everything. As expected, the special effects are superb. Some of the fight scenes could be shortened and at least one eliminated with no damage to the story. (This review provided by Erwin K. Roberts) |
