Directed by Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way) “Observe & Report” is the story of Ronnie (Seth Rogen) an ambitious mall cop, who is pretty much dealing with a lot of personal issues. This is a dark comedy revolving Ronnie’s position as a mall security guard who is competing with a police detective in the hopes of busting the male flasher that has been targeting women in the parking lot of the mall. Meanwhile Ronnie is also confronting his issues head on when he tries to join the police academy. Ronnie seems to live in another world, one that makes him an interesting figure that plays out on screen, one that is not very entertaining however.

“Observe & Report” turns out to be another mall cop film, this one containing a little less fluff. Being a Seth Rogen fan I had high hopes for his film outside the Apatow clan, unfortunately I was sadly disappointed by this confusing mess. The storyline jumps all over the place and is so unpredictable that it leaves a bad aftertaste, or maybe that is from the male streaker with way too much screen time. Either way the film was good for a handful of laughs and maybe a nap for some viewers. This one was a bore and the script was unworthy of Rogen’s humorous standard. Aside from the slowness of the film I did not find it entertaining at all to joke about bipolar disorder and some people may find offense at with the concerning issues surrounding the possible date rape scene.

All I have to say is this mall cop makes Paul Blart look good, and that’s not saying much.
