| Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman) wants to lose his virginity before he begins his freshman year of college at the University of Wisconsin. He is an 18-year-old wallflower and often the butt of jokes.
He works at the local mall in a donut shop. He hands out coupons dressed in a giant bandito outfit as the store mascot Señor Donut. The fortunes of this sex-starved geek are about to change.
He meets a mysterious girl named Ms. Tasty (Katrina Bowden from "30 Rock") in an online chat room who promises to go all the way. The only problem is that she is 500 miles away in Knoxville. Ian risks life and limb by stealing his older brother’s vintage 1969 Pontiac GTO, which is affectionately called The Judge. He sets out from his suburban Chicago digs for a rendezvous with this supposedly sexy blonde stranger.
Ian is accompanied by devil-may-care pal Lance (Clark Duke) and his longtime best friend Felicia (Amanda Crew), who is the girl of his dreams.
This romantic comedy is filled with hilarious misadventures and raunchy escapades. The road trip of a lifetime has all the expected bells and whistles. They make a pit stop for gas and food. Lance consoles a sobbing female convenience store employee and draws the jealous wrath of her redneck husband. A wild chase through a cornfield follows. After this detour, the car overheats and breaks down. An embarrassing moment occurs where they each take turns urinating into the radiator. They end up getting a tow from a sarcastic Amish farmer (Seth Green) riding in a horse-drawn carriage.
Forced to spend the night while the car is being repaired, they attend a shindig where Lance meets knockout Amish babe Mary (Alice Greczyn). After a few more miles down the road, they run over a possum and get arrested.
These comedic hijinks set the stage for a cute and endearing ending where everything conveniently falls into place. The movie revolves around the theme of whether a close friendship between a boy and a girl will be destroyed if they decide to have sex.
It differentiates between the random meaningless variety and love-inspired intimacy. Safe sex and abstinence are part of the package.
The term "visiting Grandma" takes on a whole new meaning.
The three leads (Zuckerman, Crew and Duke) do a good job and the audience grows fond of them. James Marsden ("27 Dresses," "Enchanted" and the "X-Men" trilogy) as Ian’s mean-tempered, older brother Rex stands out in a key supporting role. The bearded Green makes an indelible impression with his witty remarks and nearly steals the entire movie with a limited appearance.
The soundtrack contains loud, upbeat music. This movie is tailored for a younger adolescent age group. It is a shame it isn’t rated PG-13 so more teenagers could attend.
The peek-a-boo nudity leaves a lot to the imagination. There are crude suggestive innuendos and lots of below-the-belt references to male and female anatomy.
"Sex Drive" was directed and co-written by Sean Anders based on the book "All the Way" by Andy Behrens. Anders has a promising future and this could be the start of a franchise like the "American Pie" trilogy. The frequent laughs and fuzzy feeling of recognition make this a perfect date movie.
