| What Happens in Vegas is a sorrow attempt at a romantic comedy. Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher star as Jack and Joy, two singles who escape to Las Vegas to flee from their problems back home and will wind up regretting it. After an awkward meeting in the hotel Jack begs Joy to join him for a night on the town on the strip. A night which will include drinking, dancing, gambling and of course a wedding. When the two awake the next morning to discover they are married they are immediate to jump to the idea of an annulment. After a few words are exchanged Jack plays a quarter that Joy has put into a progressive slot machine and what do you know. Triple – Triple – Triple, progressive win totaling three million dollars. Joy insists it is her quarter, but since Jack played it, he is considered the winner. But they are still married at the time of the winning jackpot, which means it is a 50/50 winning, or is it?
Once the married couple returns home they head to court to settle the dispute over the money won. The judge does not go easy on them and orders them to six months “hard marriage”, which will include counseling. This all must be completed before a divorce and dividing of assets will be completed. Needless to say neither party is happy with the ruling, but will comply in the hope that the money will be divided up at the end of the six month. Can these two make it through six months without killing each other, or is there a change that true love will evolve from this situation?
This romantic tale lacked in many areas. The storyline started out strong, but slowly faded and became very repetitive and obnoxious. Everyone is looking for true love and the odds of finding it at a slot machine are slim. Ashton Kutcher had an average performance and Cameron Diaz failed to impress me. This is the standard film she stars in and she did not offer anything extra to this character than what she has for "Something About Mary" or "The Sweetest Thing". There was no real chemistry noted between the two and the film was a disappointment. There were so few shots of Vegas that it should not even be allowed in the title. So let the saying stand, "What happens in Vegas, should stay in Vegas."
