And You Thought Gotham City Was Bad... When I saw “Sin City” I was not overly impressed. The film is based on a series of graphic novels by writer/artist Frank Miller. The trailers say "heroes will rise." The only person in the whole movie worthy of that title is Bruce Willis' cop.

Lots of people will be put off by the three not quite interrelated story lines. Others will be puzzled about the meta-human powers exhibited by various characters. No super-heroes here. In fact the only ones who wear spandex are the heavily armed prostitutes who control one section of the deeply corrupt city.

Fifteen years ago Warren Beatty's “Dick Tracy” paid homage to the four color printing process by only using a few primary colors on screen. “Sin City” essentially stays in black & white unless they want to throw blood in your face. Compared to “Sin City” the heavily color processed "Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow" is a 1950's Technicolor western.

I'm no fan of Frank Miller's comics work. However I'm glad that for once it appears that the creator of a comics based property got to help bring his own vision to the screen. That doesn't mean I have to like the finished product. I didn't care for his writing on “Robocop 3” either.

However, I'm only one opinion. 'Pokey' is an on-line friend whose views I respect. He likes the graphic novels. I hope he doesn't mind me borrowing his post to a forum we belong to. On opening day he told us, “I went and saw an early matinée of Sin City and enjoyed it very much for what it was, a Frank Miller comic book. 3 stars out of 4 and 4 stars for the Mickey Rourke segment. Not for kids and not a date movie unless the girl is a comic book fan. A half a notch below the Kill Bill films but very much worth seeing. Lot's of graphic novel violence.” He's got that right. Be careful who you take to “Sin City.”
