| After many months of ballyhoo, this revolutionary film blasts off with Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Giovanni Ribisi, and Angelina Jolie. You could tell from the first few minutes this was an innovative film as a giant dirigible docked on the empire state building in 1938 New York during a snowstorm.
Reminiscent of old movie serials, the story has Sky Captain Joe Sullivan (Jude Law) and news reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) at the center of the story. Action takes off immediately as giant robots invade New York and a SOS goes out for Sky Captain to come to the rescue. After the battle, they try and solve the mystery why the robots are killing key scientists and robbing the world of crucial assets.
Giovanni Ribisi plays Dex, Sky Captain's genius science nerd friend who is quite effective. Angelina Jolie is great as a one-eyed commander of an aerial floatilla who gets into the action.
After underwater fights, battling monsters in a jungle, the film comes to an exciting climax in a hideaway for a doomsday machine, much like a James Bond film.
And computers create all this action as the actors carry on in front of simple props and a blue screen. Science fiction fans are already trying to classify the multitude of references to other films like King Kong, Raiders, Metropolis, Wizard of Oz and many more. This film is great and warrants repeated viewing.
