This represents the fourth in the Exorcist series, this time going back to the beginning. A young Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgard) ventures to a remote region in Kenya on an archeological dig. He finds a buried church in mint condition and discovers a crypt beneath the church. Something wicked sleeps waiting to be awakened. Father Merrin encounters demonic evil and performs his first exorcism. The film focuses too much on gore and weird special effects. The cinematography is very good.

It opened in top spot showing people were interested in the series. Director Renny Harlin is a fan of the horror genre and has had experience with action films.
