| This surprisingly funny film with a great cast, which includes Glen Close, Bette Midler Nicole Kidman, Christopher Walken, Jon Lovitz and Matthew Broderick, blew me away. Even my favorite country and western singer, Faith Hill was in it (but had little to do except look pretty). Based on the 1975 horror. classic, screenwriter Paul Rudnick has taken a tongue-in-cheek approach with elaborate jokes. I rolled over in laughter. Glen Close practically stole the show as Stepford's official greeter and real estate lady. My favorite oddball character, Christopher Walken, plays her husband.
As the story begins, we find Joanna (Nicole Kidman), a tough TV network guru who goes nuts when she is fired for a TV show that misfires. Now she, along with husband Walter (Matthew Broderick), and their kids have retired to the model community of Stepford, Connecticut where everything is perfect including the Barbie like wives.
Only a few neighbors are normal, including a messy novelist, Bobbie (Bette Midler) and a sloppy writer Roger (Roger Bart). Matthew Broderick cracks me up with his double takes. Nicole Kidman plays the bitchy Joanna with enthusiasm.
The bad guys are a whole lot of fun. Christopher Walken plays Mike, a creepy guy who is president of Stepford's Men's Association. Glen Close is hilarious in her welcome wagon role with an amazing speech in the film's climax. Don't try to figure the logic of the ending. Just sit back and enjoy a funny movie. This is a Bran Oz film.
