This is the new version of George Romero's 1979 low-budget flick with a good dose of comedy added. It is entertaining and follows character studies with the zombies relegated mostly to the background. Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber and Mekhi Phifer sta. Watch for original cast member cameos by Ken Foree and Scott Reiniger. Makeup artist/actor Tom Savini also makes a cameo appearance. I met Tom in Kansas City last fall during the H2H film festival and he spoke highly of this remake. The opening sequence was a knockout getting the film off to a fast pace before the credits rolled. A group of survivors hole up in a shopping mall and attempt to escape the zombies outside. A lone survivor on a roof across the way communicates with Denneth (Ving Rhames). Just like in the recent 28 days, zombies move quickly and transform into ravaging flesh eaters very quickly after they diet. The finale is told through a series of very fast clips mixed in with the end credits. So don't leave until the very end or you will miss the big finale.
