Jude Law plays a battle shaken Civil War soldier coming back home after serious battles with the Union army. Nicole Kidman is the woman he left behind. She is forced to endure hardships back home. A mountain woman played by Renee Zellweger teaches her how to survive on the farm after her father dies. Anthony Minghella brings Charles Frazier's 1997 best-selling novel to the big screen. Other stars are Natalie Portman and Brendan Gleeson. The project is a huge financial investment for Miramax, which took over 6 years to develop. Civil war fans mount up for this historical drama. Renee Zellweger is outstanding in her role of a mountain woman helping Nicole to survive. The film was shot in Romania and the cast endured much hardship coping with the weather and coldness of the area.
