Manhattan is a big city and when you need something delivered in a hurry a bike messenger is the way to go. That is unless what they are carrying is something that a dirty cop is after. In “Premium Rush” we are given a glimpse into the world of these messengers and how dangerous their jobs are on the streets. Constant quick thinking and directions are a must for day to day survival. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Wilee one of the messengers who seems to be the most talented. His skills seem to come from his foreseeing the best route and riding with no brakes.
Wilee is a customer favorite who is hand selected to pick up a package from a local university and deliver it to Chinatown. Wilee meets up with Nima (Jamie Chung) and receives the envelope to deliver. It is immediately known to Wilee that this package is important to her, but so is every other package he seems to deliver so he does not take her warning seriously. That is until he is approached by a man trying to get the package from him.
Knowing the rules Wilee does not give in to the man's demands to be given the package. Instead he takes off on what becomes a dangerous pursuit. One that leads him to find out that this man is a cop and he has gotten himself into a load of trouble with this envelope. When he decides his safety is not worth the delivery he returns the envelope to the university where Nima is visibly upset. Upon discovering what the package is for he enlists the help of Vanessa (Dania Ramirez), fellow messenger to help get the package delivered on time.
“Premium Rush” is a wild film that has some action packed scenes, but is no home run. The storyline is outlandish but exciting to the end. Scene stealing moments of the film come from Michael Shannon (Bobby Monday) who portrays the dirty cop. Without his performance this film would not be as special as it was. I enjoyed the city street views and the bike riding which included some great stunts. Overall it will make a fun evening out, but don't expect greatness out of this race to the finish. |
