| The movie world was saddened when Fay Wray passed on recently. The Empire State Building, the skyscraper that King Kong scaled while holding tight to Fay Wray, dimmed its lights for 15 minutes the Tuesday following her death. Wray who was 96 died quietly in her sleep at her Manhattan apartment. During a career that started in 1923, Wray appeared with such stars as Ronald Coleman, Gary Cooper and Spencer Tracy. "King Kong" was remade in 1976 with the ape scaling the World Trade center towers with Jessica Lange in his oversized grip.
Filmmaker Peter Jackson was influenced by King Kong and is now filming an updated version of the story about this giant ape starring Naomi Watts. I met Naomi during the Palm Springs Film Festival last January. She is as striking in person as she is on the screen. On a recent appearance on a late night talk show, she described an experience where she met Fay Wray and discussed the original Kong. |
